Ayurvedic Breakfast — Spiced Oatmeal

Inspired by my dads comforting morning breakfast, this oatmeal is my favorite morning go-to. It has a very grounding effect to help you start your day feeling balanced and stable.

Ayurveda, yogas sister science, comes from the sanskirt words “ayus — life” and “veda—knowledge” translating to the knowledge of life. The belief is that each mind & body is unique and by understanding our makeup we can cater a lifestyle that balances us. We categorize energies found throughout in the mind & body as doshas, and varying proportion of these doshas constitute the blueprint of the mind & body. A bit esoteric to start with, but if this is your first time exposed to these concepts, I recommend taking this Dosha Quiz from my mentor Sachi to find out more about your unique constituents.

Balancing Dosha’s: This recipe is great to balance Vata dosha, as it . Omit the allspice and ginger powder to balance pitta dosha.

Servings: 2 (with some leftovers)

Prep time: 15 minutes

Ingredients

2 tablespoons chia seeds

1 cup milk or milk substitute

1 cup old fashioned oats — my dad uses Quaker Oats

2 cups water

3 Dried Figs or 2 tbs raisins

1/4 teaspoon ginger powder — emit to balance pitta dosha

1/4 teaspoon allspice powder — emit to balance pitta dosha

1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom

1/4 cinnamon powder

1 small or medium apple (not green)

2 tablespoons maple syrup

Directions

  1. Add 1 cup milk & 3 cups of water into a medium saucepan over medium heat till it starts to boil.

  2. Peel and slice one apple and cut dried figs into eights.

  3. Add apple pieces, cardamom, cinnamon, allspice and ginger into saucepan, stir for 1 minute.

  4. Stirring continuously, pour in the oats and figs and reduce the heat to a simmer.

  5. Stir occasionally for 7–8 minutes until the mixture reaches a creamy consistency.

  6. Remove saucepan from heat, add maple syrup and chai seeds to the mix.

If you like your oatmeal cold, you can place you pan in the fridge and let it sit for 30 minutes. Make sure to leave it a little liquidy if you do so, as it will thicken in the fridge.

Pour mixture in bowl and enjoy with love :)
